Good ambiance, great location - but “hit and miss” on service

Just wrapping up a shorter stay at Mövenpick Dead Sea, at the end of a longer Jordan trip. Mövenpick Petra is overall an enjoyable place to stay, with fantastic views (our room was in the Wadi Rum area, close to the beach - with a great terrace to sit, and enjoy the sea- and sunset views: worth getting those rooms). The overall design idea of a “village feel” is well executed, and many areas have beautiful gardens, and older, larger trees. Lots of pools, and - as it is somewhat low season - not crowded and enjoyable. On the positive, we enjoyed the heated pools, the lovely setting, and most staff genuinely doing their best - also Dinner at Luigi’s, especially the beetroot & Gorgonzola salad, as well as the risotto, were really good. Breakfast is well presented, with a lot of staff available. There were, however, a few let-downs and inconsistencies that spoilt a bit what could have been an outstanding experience given location and potential: — Responsiveness ahead of our stay: as usual, I reach out ahead of our stay to check on room location, restaurant reservations, and advise the hotel on arrival/departure times. Some responses came back on specific items from different departments, some of those never responded, other answers were confusing. — (Non-) Availability of venues - with inaccurate information on website: one of the reasons we chose Mövenpick over the many other options available within 200m left and right was the availability of a pan-Asian restaurant, Chopstick - only to learn a day before that it is “closed until further notice” (yet still listed on Accor App, Website and Google as open). Hairdresser in Spa is close - while still listed. All no big deal, but would be professional to update — Our room overall was lovely, but the bedding is totally worn down, felt like lying in a hammock rather than the usual Mövenpick / Accor high quality bedding. Pillow had “clubbed-together” feathers that felt like having small balls inside. Needs urgent replacement. Also room a bit damp, with the typical smell. — The Dead Sea “beach” is a nice touch, but it’s actually quite difficult to go into the water - why not have a simple wooden, removable walk way with a handle? The hotel staff is wonderful helping guests, but this feels a bit “neglected” — Breakfast service: while overall a nice spread, and lots of waiters we ordered an extra sparkling water. First, waiter forgot - and after reminding kindly another colleague came with the Bottle, and - despite my wife signaling to him - served the water to a different table which had 1) been blocked for a French later-age couple in an awkward way by the head waiter (lying that “others that taking this table”, and chasing away another Asian-looking client before), and 2) seemed to be treated with clear preference over other guests. Then - the head waiter realizing the mistake - ordered his colleague to our table, where he filled one glass with the remaining sparking water, again totally ignoring my wife - and then just disappeared. No word, no excuse. Only after speaking to the restaurant manager, they both came back with a second glass, and a new bottle. The main point is the apparent ignorance of my wife, who is a hotel school-trained hospitality professional herself - apparently looking Asian, and being a women - which made her feel ignored, less valued and not like a guest. We understand cultural nuances, being citizens of two continents ourselves, and having travelled the world as independent travelers. But behavior like this in a supposedly international, Accor-run 5* hotel has nothing to do with cultural sensitivity - it’s just poor training, and unprofessional behavior. While we enjoyed our last hours at the wonderful infinity pool, with the friendly pool attendant and having good room service food on our terrace overlooking the Dead Sea - but we leave with a hotel that would have SO much potential, but is currently not fully living up to it.

Great resort on the Dead Sea

We booked at stayed in a sea view room. Pros: A huge and stunning resort on the Dead Sea with several pools, including winter pools with heating, jacuzzis, and access to the Dead Sea including mud bath facilities. Buildings had a beautiful aesthetic of traditional middle eastern stone. There are also tennis courts, a gym and spa onsite. We did not use these during our short stay. The resort is massive and so there are golf carts available to take you around. This was particularly helpful to get down to and up from the Dead Sea as the resort is built up way above th Sea level. Dead Sea experience was very good, there were plenty of hotel staff, included life guards to assist all guests and mix mud, adding to the overall experience. In the evening, there was entertainment including belly dancer and traditional singers. As a Movenpick tradition - there is a chocolate hour which served various chocolates - a lovely touch. Bars served alcohol and 2 bars had a happy hour with selected drinks - 50% off. Room was a good size with several toiletries, fridge and a very comfortable large bed. Balcony had a great view for the sunset. Mini bar soft drinks were included within the price. The breakfast and dinner buffet options were extensive. It was my birthday during our trip, staff organised a cake post dinner in the room which was a lovely touch. Cons: Overall, the rooms are dated and are in need of a renovation. In particular, the bathroom was worn and sealant etc was not clean. The dinner / breakfast buffet restaurant does not flow well, as the food and seating area is separated. Felt more like a canteen rather than 5* resort buffet. Service to replenish items in buffet felt slow, waited and asked several staff for carrot juice (which was finished). More attentive staff is required.

A beautiful oasis

I wish we had more time here or were closer so that we could visit again soon. The property is lovely with winding, shady pathways, fountains, stonework, multiple pools, a beautiful spa, and of course the direct access to the Dead Sea staffed with lifeguards that will assist you with everything from a mud scrub to getting and out to taking photos. This would be the perfect spot to stay for a week and just be.

Seedy, grimey, dirty, unsafe - good spa

Absolutely not. This place is terrible! Dead Sea access, the reason one is there to begin with: terrible! It’s dirty, with actual garbage all along the shore. It smells of sewage. I was traveling as a solo female traveler, there was a large group of men that decided that despite there being a whole sea, they had to be where I was, and the lifeguards helped direct one of them swimming backwards to me, despite me repeatedly trying to swim away! They did not realize I actually understood a fair bit of Arabic. I literally ran away from the Dead Sea. Touted as a 5 Star, this is easily one of the worst hotels I have stayed at. The rooms are dingy and old, with broken screens, and stained bedsheets. Oh, and they have REMOVED the chain to lock the door, and DISABLED the deadbolt, so you cannot double lock the door from the inside to prevent unauthorized entry. The bathroom hasn’t been cleaned for what seems like years, empty shower gel, and lotion containers; things you kind of need after being in the saltiest sea on earth. and the outdoor verandah looks like a drug den. Pics attached, don’t just take my word for it! Lastly, I clearly requested a non smoking room, I was plonked in a smoking one. The only thing I would recommend is the spa, it was great, and my masseuse Aisa was fantastic
