I planned to stay in this hotel with my 2years old son. The hotel rejected the stay. 2year old children have to be booked and payed as adaults due to „fire safety reasons“. The hotel was not able to answer how this is complient to the hotel AGBs and was not able or willing to propose a solution. I was just told I can‘t book as family. The first hotel ever which rejected us as family.
At 02h00 the hotel was evacuated on short notice due to unknown dangerous reasons. Guests was using the emergency stairway as elevators was out of order. We started from level 9 running down the stairway equipped with wet tovels in case of fire. To get outside we had to brake the glass shield protecting the external door. Outside we, the guests of the hotel, was meet only by wet darkness. No representative from the hotel at the evacuation door to guide us to a pre set meeting place. Instead we were left standing there in the darkness with out any guidance whatsoever. After a while a police car showed up. The police did not bother to get involved in this evacuation and remained inside the car. I guess they expected hotel management to have a routine covering such an event, but there was no such person to be found. When the crowd after a while started walking towards the main entrance at the other side of the building, we meet the fire brigade who told us that this was a false alarm and we again could enter the building. We meet a lonely night pottier who just confirmed that this was a false alarm and it was now safe to enter the building and our rooms again through the evacuation stairways as the elevators was still out of order in evacuation mode. We took the long 9+3 levels walk up the stairs under silence and reflected on all things that could have gone wrong if this would have been a real dangerous situation such as fire or a hostile attack on the hotel. How come there was no plan on how to gather the evacuated guests outside the hotel ? How come there was no communication with the evacuated guests, neither by the responsible hotel management/staff, the police or the fire brigade ? Why did no one from the hotel management show up after 5-10 minutes to help the night portier sort out the situation with distressed hotel guests ? A conversation this morning after breakfast with the responsible manager only gave at hand that they had an evacuation system for the hotel, but that did not include anything of the points I raised above on how to deal with hotel guest left alone outside the hotel in the dark wondering about what to do, where to go and why no one from the hotel take on its duty to lead the guests to safety in this type of situation. The hotel manager only regretted what happend and I guess confessed that this hotel actually did not have its routines in order to handle a panic evacuation of its guests. What can we say about this ??? A scandal and shame on the responsible hotel manager who did not live up to the expected safety standard of a Mövenpick Hotel. Maybe Hamburg or Germany have less rigid rules in matter of safety at hotels, but I doubt it. The Swiss are normally to be trusted, but also them are now know to fail. Nobody cares until the accident happens and lives are lost. Then managers are fired, guests are compensated and routines are put in place to avoid future failures. Should you stay as guest at Mövenpick Hotel in Hamburg if you know they neglect standard evacuation safety routines ??? The manager here in Hamburg told me that was the case last night. So Mövenpick managers, what do you think about hotel safety and what will you do to sharpen up and avoid a future catastrophe in Hamburg or somewhere else where the hotel chain in represented ??? I just need to know !!!
A very nice hotel. The room was lovely with a comfortable bed. Reception staff were very helpful and the cleanliness of the room was of the highest order. Absolutely no complaints in regards to the room or high level of work from the hotel staff. The hotel is a 2 minute walk from the Metro. One concern here is the 5 or 6 African drug dealers who loiter outside the Metro station all day every day. They approach you and ask you to head over to the side to buy some of their aspirin or chalk. This may make some people feel uneasy about taking the metro at night. I am surprised the hotel do not report these individuals to the authorities as it's fairly off putting. I did not observe these dealers outside other metro stations at the same level as this one. My second and final concern is the price the hotel charges guests for water. I went to the bar later at night to collect 2 x bottles as the hotel only provides one tiny bottle per day. This is a bit ludicrous considering the price they charge. Anyway, I asked the barman for 2 bottles of water to take away. I was charged 14€ for 1.5 litres which is an absolute disgrace. The hotel should be ashamed of itself for ripping people off in this manner. For this act of daylight robbery, the hotel only receives a 4 star rating from me.
Strange hotel. I usually like quirky hotels but this didn’t make it. The cold uninviting reception was the first point I realised I wasn’t going to be happy here. The hotel is a converted water tower and has dripping water sounds and fog horn sounds in the foyer. Why? The room had little charm and felt a bit like a cell with small windows. The restaurant was closed the night we were there. Why? Breakfast was average. Food on hot ish plates. Make your own tea and coffee. ‘Toaster’ as usual useless. I had a reasonable dinner one night. But the ambience of the night time restaurant was terrible. Dim the lights put some candles. It’s so easy done. Bit of thought. Reception didn’t answer so had to go down to speak to them. Room wasn’t serviced even although I told reception to tell house keeping I was going out. Tv no English channels at all, not even one news channel. All in all, not good enough. My wife and I had booked for 4 days and moved out after 2. Manager very understanding and didn’t charge us. Would I go back….. what do you think.
Good location, close to metro and walking distance to the Alster. Amazing architecture from water storage tower to hotel, Bets view, best breakfast and very patient friendly staff!! Anytime I will come again, thanks
