I'm not squeamish, and I've stayed in some pretty rough places, but nothing quite prepared me for the Mövenpick at Kuala Lumpur international airport. To be clear, this is advertised as 4 star luxury. That puts it alongside some pretty special company around the world, and this is a well-known and respected brand, part of the Accor group. It should be a great experience, as most 4 star hotels are. But this is not the case. And also to be fair to the staff, they were reasonably attentive, but not at all in tune with the situation. Here's why... Travelling through Malaysia before Christmas with a friend, we stopped at this hotel in order to catch an early flight out. We both booked standard rooms and needed a good rest before leaving the next day. Check-in was reasonably simple and trouble free... and we each got given our respective room key cards. On first glance in the room it appears as a bit tired, but a standard hotel layout - bathroom to the left immediately on opening the door, then a bed space with a double bed, TV on the wall, desk and chair as you'd expect. However, then you begin to look more closely. The room was filthy. I am not talking about a few spots of dust here or there, I am saying genuinely disgustingly dirty for this quality of hotel. The carpet on the floor had not been vacuumed for some considerable time, as evidenced by the hair ties from previous guests, the detritus from whatever got dropped, dead insects, hair and bits of tissue. Behind the curtains on the floor was an old sock. Looking further, under the bed were rotting pieces of food. In the shower there was pubic hair around the seat, dirt in the shower cubicle and a general lack of maintenance. Walls were filthy, paint was flaking, and on the bed, the sheets were stained.. and the smell! Musty, dirty, and nowhere near fresh. The air con did not work. Both our rooms were the same level of disgusting, so we called the manager. To be fair, they did eventually upgrade us to a small suite. The type of room where there is a sofa in a different room to the bed, and the en-suite is bigger. However, these were also not clean. It was remarkable that a suite, which retails for visitors at well over US$200 a night could be so bad, and both of them were awful. However, the real shocker was the used condom under the cushion on the sofa in my companion's room. We called the manager again, and asked them to bring a member of housekeeping with them. We showed the things we had found, and the staff member, who was not wearing any gloves, proceeded to remove the condom and scratch the dried semen from the sofa with his fingernails. This was the standard of hygiene we were dealing with. They upgraded both of us again to an executive suite each, and after some discussion decided to give a complimentary evening meal. Having seen how the housekeeping staff worked, I was reluctant to eat anything prepared in the kitchen out of sight... In the very large and potentially comfortable executive suites, which they insisted were cleaned before we went in, there was blood in the bath tub, the coffee machine (Nespresso) didn't work, and it was tired looking.... but apart from that it was at a much better level of cleanliness. I would say this room approached 4 stars, but fell short. On checkout, after such a horrific experience, you might expect a word from the duty manager to offer some apology. None came. We left, and I vowed I'd never return to that hotel, or to a Mövenpick hotel ever again. It's tired, dirty, inhospitable and unfriendly. Why would you want to stay there? If it hadn't been for the upgrades and the time of night I would have demanded a refund and walked out.
We chose this hotel because it has a pool and a free airport shuttle. Close to the airport, it gave us time to relax. Website states to contact hotel for shuttle information. I phoned, emailed and sent messages for two days prior to traveling but did not receive any answer. We found the shuttle through pure luck. Reception at hotel was excellent - very friendly, accommodating staff. Good room, excellent bedding, housecoats, fluffy towels, water bottles. Pool is very nice indeed with space to sit. At dinner time food and service is excellent. Just should be noted that this is a Muslim hotel and there is no alcohol at all available, so don't come if you want a beer or wine with your dinner. Breakfast buffet is extensive with excellent quality food, but tables and floor are quite dirty at breakfast time. We could not find breakfast times posted anywhere. Our room was on the highway side and there was some traffic and airplane noise but not bad. All is all a good stay in pleasant, relaxing surroundings.
Premises and room well maintained. Love the room. Bed and pillows comfortable. Air conditioning good. Water pressure good. Breakfast good with varieties of spread. Just the parking arrangement and walking to lobby is not very convenient.
Loved everything about this hotel. The complimentary chocolate buffet was a nice touch, but not good for the figure. Breakfast spread was incredible. The pool area was just lovely as well. I will hopefully get to stay here again.
I will admit, I was a little hesitant booking the Movenpick after reading some of the reviews on here. I am pleased to say that I had none of the issues some of the others describe regarding cleanliness or poor facilities. I called ahead to arrange the free shuttle to collect me at KLIA and was given clear instructions on where and when to wait and the shuttle arrived exactly on time. Ten minutes later I was in the grand lobby. Check in was very swift and I was on my way to my room in a couple minutes. Reading other reviews, this seems to be the point disappointment sets in. However when I opened the door to my room I was pleasantly surprised. The room was large and well appointed. Of course, the hotel is not new so there was a little wear and tear but nothing that would interfere with my stay. The room was well cleaned, and had all the facilities I needed. Yes, if I had paid US$200 I would have been a little 'meh' but I paid around US$80 including breakfast so I thought this represented excellent value. There are some areas for development though that the hotel could fix very quickly - 1) opening times of facilities. With airport hotels, most of the guests are probably like myself - a quick stop over, probably arriving quite late in the evening and departing early in the morning. It helps to have facilities like gyms and restaurants with opening hours to cater for this. I found the opening time of the gym disappointing. It opens at 8am (I will have left by then) and closes at 8pm (I arrived at 8:30pm). Most airport hotels have gyms with much wider opening hours. Same with breakfast, being that many guests leave early in the morning most airport hotels reflect this with early breakfast hours from 5am or so. Here, breakfast does not start until 6:30am. 2) The wifi. The good news is it is free and easy to connect to. The bad news is that it is very very slow. I would not hesitate to stay here again if I found a rate similar to the one I booked. I think the hotel represents great value for money.
