Basler Fasnacht - Tradition & Magic

10th March - 12th. March 2025

Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Basel's Fasnacht and experience the perfect stay at Mövenpick Hotel Basel – right in the heart of the festivities!

UNESCO World Cultural Heritaga

For three days during Fasnacht, Basel is in a state of exception. Switzerland’s largest carnival is part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage and captivates both locals and visitors alike.

Basel's Fasnacht, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage event, is shaped by Protestant melancholy and intellectual sophistication, but above all, by breathtaking beauty. Unlike traditional carnival celebrations, which focus on uninhibited revelry, Fasnacht in Basel is something much more – a celebration of culture, tradition, creativity, and the unique sense of community that unites an entire city.

Mövenpick Hotel Basel is the perfect starting point to fully experience Basel’s Fasnacht. Close to the action yet offering a tranquil retreat, the hotel provides an unparalleled haven of comfort and relaxation during this extraordinary time.

Short & Crisp - Whats happening?

Basel’s Fasnacht takes place this year from February 19 to February 21, 2024. Here’s what you need to know about Basel’s Fasnacht:

  • Fasnacht lasts exactly three days. It begins on Monday morning at 4:00 AM with the "Morgenstraich" and ends on Thursday morning at 4:00 AM with the "Ändstraich".
  • There is a clear distinction between participants and spectators. Only those actively taking part in Fasnacht wear costumes. Visitors and active Fasnächtler are strictly distinguished.
  • At its core, Fasnacht is about social critique and resistance against authority. With remarkable creativity, the active participants address various societal issues and critique both society and the establishment. This is reflected in their colorful costumes, elaborate props, witty verses, and, most strikingly, the beautifully illuminated lanterns carried through the streets during "Morgenstraich".
  • Wear a "Blaggedde". Visitors should buy a "Blaggedde" and wear it visibly. This badge helps finance Fasnacht. Without one, you might find yourself the target of a confetti shower!

The famous «Morgenstraich»

In the early hours of Monday morning, at exactly 4:00 AM, the lights in Basel go out, and the "Morgenstraich" begins. The streets are enveloped in darkness, illuminated only by the lanterns of the Fasnächtler, while the captivating rhythm of piccolos and drums echoes through the narrow alleys.

Amidst this mystical atmosphere, Fasnächtler and curious visitors stroll through Basel's streets, enchanted by the unique ambiance. As the first light of day appears, they gather to warm up with a hearty Mehlsuppe (flour soup) or a savory Zwiebelwähe (onion tart), preparing themselves for the eventful day ahead at Basel’s Fasnacht.

For our guests during Morgenstraich, we offer:

  • From 4:00 AM: Coffee & tea station with fresh croissants
  • From 5:30 AM: Breakfast buffet

To make the early morning start a little easier, we pamper you at Mövenpick Hotel Basel with a light breakfast before Morgenstraich.

Parade "Cortêge"

On Monday and Wednesday, from 1:30 PM to 6:00 PM, the "Cortège" winds its way through the city. This vibrant parade sees Fasnächtler handing out "Dääfeli" (sweets) while impressing the crowds with their creative costumes, floats, and props.

Our recommendation: Watch the "Cortège" from Aeschenplatz – just a 5-minute walk from Mövenpick Hotel Basel!

Childrens Fasnacht on Tuesday

On Tuesday, the "Binggis" (children) take over the city. Just like the grown-ups, the little ones enthusiastically throw "Dääfeli" (sweets) and "Räppli" (confetti) into the crowd.

Our recommendation: On Tuesday, the lines between active and passive Fasnächtler blur. If you're experiencing Fasnacht with children, let them dress up! Not only is it adorable, but it also doubles the fun for everyone.

Guggen Conerts

On Tuesday evening, the heart of the city beats to the rhythm of Guggenmusik. Armed with trumpets, trombones, tubas, drums, timpani, and percussion, the musicians perform well-known rock and pop melodies – an experience that leaves no one untouched. Tapping along to the beat is simply a must!

Our recommendation: Take the Tuesday morning to relax in the wellness area of Mövenpick Hotel Basel and prepare for a long night ahead. "Gässeln" (wandering through the alleys) on Tuesday night is known to last the longest!

Throughout the three days of Basel’s Fasnacht, we bring the festivities directly to our Mövenpick breakfast buffet, featuring local specialties for you to enjoy.
